The Dream Cruise is the largest single day car event in the world. But it really is not a single day event. All year long cars and gawkers line US Highway 1 (the first concrete highway built in the U.S.) through a 13 mile/14 city route to see what is happening on this famous drive. However, the frenzy grows rapidly as the third Saturday in August approaches. On this day of the actual cruise I staked out 13 Mile and Woodward which falls more in the center of the activities and spent a few hours roaming and taking pictures, the other times I was either a cruiser or gawker. The streets adjoining Woodward fill fast, as every available parking space is “rented” to cruisers or venders or car companies. In the case of one shopping center parking lot, Dodge filled up the whole lot with cars from various eras. During this day some 1.25 million gawkers about 50 thousand cruisers were expected as this weather perfect. Local TV coverage covers the actual cruise with a 2 hour live special and the newspapers go on for days about the event. Every city adjoining the 14 primary cities have related activities during cruise week. This is such a large event that it has become a crowd control training event for law enforcement officers from all across the US, and each year very few problems occur. Enjoy the pics!
