The 27th Annual Simsbury Fly-In and Car Show
Simsbury Airport in Simsbury, CTSunday, September 23, 2012
The 27th Annual Simsbury Fly-In and Car Show was held under clear blue skies on September 23. Some overnight rain left wet roadways in the early morning hours until the sun dried the pavement, causing quite a few car owners to wait a bit before making the drive to Simsbury. By mid-morning there were two lines of cars making their way through the entrance. The designated show car parking areas were full by noon, so the event organizers carved out some additional space for show cars in the aircraft parking area. Many visiting aircraft attended this year, filling the show plane parking area to capacity and making it necessary for some visiting aircraft to park on the opposite side of the runway. More than 10,000 spectators attended the show the year before, and it seemed just as busy this year. A replica SPAD fighter plane of World War I vintage made the journey from Rhinebeck Aerodrome, New York and was much appreciated by those of us who saw it land and taxi to the show plane parking area. The car show featured a mix of antiques, street rods, muscle cars, imports, and a few late model exotic cars. The aircraft show had late model production planes along with Experimental, vintage general aviation, and former military aircraft. It was a great way to spend a few hours on a sunny Sunday in late September.
