I had been drafted in August 1967, got married Sept 1967. A couple of weeks prior to marriage, I went down the El Camino Real in Redwood City on a Wednesday night and there sat, on the east side of the boulevard heading north, a small used car lot with the Sonny Morris Bailon-built ‘49 Merc sitting on the back line. It was in sad shape, but for $800 it could have been mine. The following weekend I attended the drags at Fremont. I stopped by Central Chevrolet on the way home just to oogle the new 1968 Vettes. Parked along the side of the building was the Encil Baker Joe Bailon-built 1959 Chevy Impala convertible, about 5 years since its build, looking as fresh as the day it was finished, in candy red with a Jerry Sahagon tuck and roll interior, radical body mods and all. It was for sale for $2495. I had to pass on both cars because I had no place to store them for four years.
