Two years ago I asked MSRA senior member Rick Schnell to help develop a story for Hot Rod Hot Line about the history of what had become known as the world’s fastest flathead powered vehicle. In this case, ‘Slider’ is an old school drag racer with quite the history. See the original story here.
On Saturday August 29th, 2015 at the MSRA members only annual “Super Secret / Fun Run”, the father son team of Rick and his son Joel driving broke their own world record making it down the ¼ mile in 7.647 seconds. Tweaking the nitro fuel mixture and new front end suspension designed by Joel did the trick. Better news yet is the fact that no spare parts were left on the asphalt.
Daughter in law Shelley has gotten ‘seat time’ using the ‘practice motor’ running the 1/8 mile. As Shelley says, “no fun simply watching”. Rick’s other son Scott hopefully will learn from the best and be ready for all 1000 HP on the ¼ mile one day. I guess speed and flatheads just run in the family. Congrats to the entire Schnell family, especially wife Vicki for putting up with all of this.
