A few years ago, the Grand National Roadster Show featured the Woodie, that iconic vehicle that evokes nothing so much as surf, sand and sun. Displays were filled with surfboards, tiki faces, leis, coconuts and lawn chairs. That pervasive feeling of relaxation mixed with mid-century cool is exactly what RacingJunk.com (sister site of HotRodHotline.com and part of the MotorHead Media family of sites) and VisitMyrtleBeach.com envisioned when they proposed restoring a classic Chevrolet Sedan Delivery and turning it into a beach cruiser that would be given away to one lucky winner.
Following a successful giveaway of a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado at the 2014 SEMA show, plans to find, modify, and give away another vehicle came to fruition through a partnership with Visit Myrtle Beach. “This vehicle is a chance for us to partner back up with some great folks we worked with on the truck giveaway, as well as create new partnerships as we transform this vehicle,” says Robert Adams, VP of Marketing for RacingJunk.com.
“The vision is to take this Sedan Delivery vehicle and turn it into a classic beach cruiser with a new Chevrolet Performance Connect and Cruise Package. The cruiser appeals to everyone.”
RacingJunk.com purchased a '53 Sedan Delivery and shipped it down to Outcast Kustoms in Moorseville, North Carolina for customizer Kelvin Locklear to transform the aqua green machine into a red and white beach delight, complete with surfboards pin-stripped by East Coast Artie.
Internally, the cruiser is getting a new engine and transmission - a Chevrolet Performance Connect and Cruise Package - to optimize its get up and go, and other manufacturers are contributing to the build including: Pace Performance, WELD Wheels, and Heidts Hot Rod & Muscle Car Parts for a build that will be worth $45,000.
The build is on the fast-track since the vehicle needs to be ready to hit the Hot Rod Power Tour in June, where it will participate in the Long Haul before heading up to Back to the '50s. It will also appear at various other shows during the year, including the VisitMyrtleBeach.com 300 Xfinity NASCAR Race at Kentucky Speedway, the Goodguys 18th PPG Nationals, the Syracuse Nationals, Holley LS Fest, and the SEMA and PRI Trade shows.
The giveaway officially launched nationwide on April 20, 2015 and runs through June 2016. Potential winners can enter online HERE or at any of the events where the vehicle will appear. The winner may also elect to take a cash prize of $10,000 instead of the vehicle.
We'll be updating you as we finish the build and take the cruiser on the road, so if you see us along the way, make sure to say hi and enter to win!
