The final race of the 2015 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series has come and gone, and the season's champions were crowned.
Funny Car saw Del Worsham take his first championship in the category, adding to his 2011 Top Fuel title. Worsham gained a spot in a very elite group, joining Gary Scelzi and legend Kenny Bernstein as the only other NHRA drivers to win championships in both Funny Car and Top Fuel.
"It was an amazing feeling," Worsham said. "I have been here before, not that it did me any good up there today. It felt like it was 25 years ago, and I was making my first run. We are racing for Scott, Connie, and the entire Kalitta Motorsports family. Nicky Boninfante, Jon Oberhofer, Dave Boyer and the entire DHL team, the job they have done has been incredible."
Worsham won the championship by 56 points and Jack Beckman reset the National ET record three times, which now stands at 3.884 seconds.
Top Fuel saw Shawn Langdon take down a win for his second win of the season, the first being the season opening Winternationals. Langdon finished the season in sixth place.
"I love this track," Langdon said. "This track has always kind of had a special place in my heart just because I grew up around the corner from here. As a kid, I was always out here watching my heroes race. I started my junior dragster career out there, raced a lot of sportsman classes. So many great memories out at this race track."
Meanwhile, Antron Brown stretched out his NHRA Championship lead to 231 points over Tony Schumacher after this weekend.
In Pro Stock, Allen Johnson ended his 20th season behind the wheel of a winning car. The victory was the second for the season after five final-round appearances, and 26th overall victory of his career.
Season champion Erica Enders-Stevens ended her title season pushing her lead to 220 points over Greg Anderson and Chris McGaha.
In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Eddie Krawiec took a victory and earned second place in points when he defeated two-time champ Matt Smith in the final round.
Meanwhile, Andrew Hines claimed his second consecutive and fifth overall world championship title in Pro Stock Motorcycle. Hines is the youngest driver in NHRA history to win five world championships and continues the amazing domination in the two-wheel category.
"My outstanding Harley-Davidson team did a great job of keeping me focused and keeping the pressure off of me," he said.
The 23-race 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season opens Feb. 11-14.
