Now that the boxing plates are finished, lets move on to the front crossmember. Dearborn Manufacturing, the good people who stamped the 32 frame rails we are using in this project have developed a couple of new front crossmembers.  They now offer their own version of the popular Model A crossmember and a flat front crossmember.  We choose the flat front crossmember.

Both front crossmembers are wider than the Model A front repro on the market. The wider versions let you weld the crossmember to the inside of each frame rail (check the pictures). The boxing plates will now end at the front crossmember. If I had the front crossmember before we boxed the frame rails, that would have been my approach. Instead we cut the front crossmember to fit between the boxing plates and welded on both sides of the crossmember.

Keep in mind that the crossmember must be level between the rails (the Smart Tool below was jumping between  0.0 and 0.1 while the picture was taken).  Beside that, you must end up with a positive caster of at least 5 degrees when the car is finished.  With the frame rails level (use a 4 level to check the flat area in front of the rear kickup) we install the front crossmember with 8-10 degrees of positive caster.  We do this because with the car sitting on the ground, the rake of the car eliminates a few degrees of positive caster. Positive caster is very important to making the drive a pleasant experience and not a workout at the gym.
