Recently, we have been contacted by Ian one of our readers looking for information on a Dick Dean peddle car (bi-plane) that is currently in his motorcycle shop. Can you help him out?
Hello, I was hoping someone might be able to shed a little light on a peddle car (actually a red and white bi-plane) that I have had hanging in my motorcycle shop for the last 4 years. I was told by the gentleman I acquired it from that it was built by Dick Dean. The gentleman who went by the name of Tim said he was a life long friend of Dick Dean and that he received it from Dick Dean. He said it was 1 out of 4 that Dick Dean built. He said that the paint scheme was the same as a car that Dick Dean built for David Lee Roth, Tim provided a hot rod magazine with the car in question on the front cover that did indeed say that David Lee Roth hadDick Dean build him a 1951 Mercury. I also have read that Dick Dean had a history with flying planes and that he did build toy peddle cars in his retirement for his grandchildren. I am just trying to get a little background on the plane I have in my shop, my customers are always fascinated with it and I would like to be able to tell the full story behind it if possible. I also think that if what I have been told is true, that the plane might be better suited to be on display in a hot rod museum or back with his family rather than hanging in my dusty old shop, and I would like to see it eventually get a proper home. Anything you can tell me would be helpful.
