First you find a car you want to build. That’s going to run you, lets say $6000.00 as a fixer upper . Now we need to do some suspension work. Lets not go wild so we will say $2000.00. OK we are now at the body shop for some body work and paint. Lets dig deep, with any luck at all we will be able to get out of there for around $10,000.00. It’s time to get a drive train. Ford ,Chevy or Mopar. Chevy’s the cheapest. Ford a bit more. Mopar is the most expensive but you can’t beat that Mopar sound. Oh hell I still need to get the interior done so I guess Chevy is the way to go. Motor, trans and lets not forget the shiny stuff. Well that’s going to run about $7000.00 to $10,000.00. You can see where I’m going with this. It’s costly to build a custom car especially if you want a one of a kind. So what’s a guy to do I said to myself. So 5 years ago I went on a quest to see just how cheap I could build a car. Well here it is... A 1968 VW. That’s right I said VW. With help from some friends, EBay, JC Whitney, Pomona swap meet, a great job from 1 Day paint and Body and just plain luck I was able to build a real head turner from an old VW. Not only do I take it to shows but it’s my daily driver... And all for under $4000.00 start to finish. Don’t believe me well here’s a spread sheet with the cost of building this little dream. Also some pictures taken along the way. Enjoy. |
