Located in Calhoun County, this yearly car event is held on the beautiful county fairgrounds. The yearly fair has run continuously since 1844 and is the oldest in Michigan. The city itself, once a front runner for the state capital in Michigan, lost by only 1 vote to Lansing, but they were so confident of winning that they build the governor’s mansion before the voting began. The city was incorporated in 1830 and is known for its 850 historical landmark buildings, many still nicely maintained and dating back to the mid 1800’s. There is a Rexall Drug Store that has remained in continues operation since 1854 and a bank that has remained a banking facility continuously since 1856. The car show starts in the fairgrounds and along with other events like a swap meet and pin-up girl contest, cars then caravan into downtown; there the main street is usually closed to all traffic, except the classic cars. This year the street was not closed because it is actually a state highway and the cruise was on a Saturday, creating too much political red tape to overcome. Though over the years, time has effected the size of this event but the quality and diversity of the cars remains exceptional. Enjoy the pics!
