Each September we in the Pacific Northwest enjoy a gathering of the area chapters in Whatcom County for the Bell’s Diner and Museum Open House and the Classic Car Show sponsored by the Whatcom County Chapter of the Studebaker Drivers Club.

We begin the weekend with a tour, this year we wandered through the county, stopping at Bellewood Acres for a deli style snack and a tour of their distillery and gift shop then on to Lynden for a burger or fish and chips at Grant’s Burgers. The usual Friday Night Cruise-in was at a minimum this time with only a few other cars in attendance. After the meal we toured to the Northwest Washington Fairgrounds to visit the Vintage Trailer gathering. Many beautifully restored trailers and their interesting, unique tow vehicles were on display. We enjoyed their hospitality until darkness forced us to return to the hotel in Ferndale.

Saturday morning dawned and was the Bell’s Diner and Museum Open House show and shine with 40 Studebakers in attendance. Long distance winner was from Bittern Lake, Alberta, 965 miles one way with guests coming from Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and British Columbia. Three bands played music all day, and food was served during the lunch hour. A Special Award was presented to Lionel Stone for his Lifetime Achievement with the Avanti Owners Club by James Bell. Then, the Bell’s Awards for Youngest Studebaker Driver, Oldest Studebaker, Long Distance Driven in a Studebaker and People’s Choice Award.

After we had enjoyed the day of tire kicking, meeting and greeting and telling stories we toured the group to Boomer’s Drive-in in Bellingham for the evening meal. 21 Studebakers converged on the drive-in and yet more stories and memories were shared.

On Sunday the Whatcom County Chapter held their 41st Annual Classic Car Show in Hovander Homestead Park in Ferndale, WA. We had nearly 100 vehicles in attendance and enjoyed yet another wonderful sunny day. Hot dogs and corn on the cob with home baked goodies for desert were served by the club members. A raffle held featured a load of interesting Studebaker themed products. Barb Curtis recycled trophies were presented at the end of a great Studebaker weekend. Thanks to all the folks attending from near and far! Look forward to seeing you all again soon!
