2012 Syracuse Nationals Friday July 20, 2012
NYS Fairgrounds, Syracuse, NYFriday, July 20, 2012
On Friday, July 20th, my buddy Charlie picked me up at the Un-Godly hour of 4:30 A.M. to make the 4-hour trek to Syracuse, New York for the Syracuse Nationals. It actually didn't matter much as I hardly slept at all anyhow. Totally disregarding the weatherman's prediction of a 60% chance of showers and possible thunderstorms (we missed a couple of great shows in the past for believing those lyin'!@#$%$#%s), we were treated to NO Precipitaion on the 2 days we were there. It was actually pleasant to have cloudy skies most of Friday with the temps a little cooler for our hiking around the massive fairgrounds for hours and hours and taking pictures to share with all of you Car Guys.
All the talk was saying that it was the best Friday attendance ever, so we felt sure that all previous records would be broken; cars were everywhere! At lunch time we headed over to Gianeli's on the other side of the grounds for their great sweet sausage burgers and a cold one; a break we both really needed; We're both getting up there and have some limiting health issues.
Rested and ready to go again; we were off; Inside the Exhibiters' Building I got talking with Candy Clark of American Grafitti fame (as well as 50 other movies and shows); Took her picture and got mine taken with her also; Really nice Lady; Ran into her on the grounds on Saturday as she was cruising around on a cart checking everything out; Our kind of Gal! Saw Dan Woods busy signing autographs; Then I met Cody Roth (one of Ed "Big Daddy" Roth's Sons) and bought a couple of model kits from him and some other memoribilia; I met "Big Daddy" a couple of times in the past. Didn't get to see Bo Duke & Daisy Duke (John Schneider & Catherine Bach) as the crowds around them were unreal.
4:30 P.M. and our old bodies were fading fast and the aches & pains started to catch up; We decided to head out early and go for ribs at a place Lots of people told us about - The Dinosaur Bar-B-Que in downtown Syracuse; We found it pretty easily, put our name on the waiting list and got in the long line outside; After about 45 minutes we got in and put in our orders; It was worth the wait - Unique place with a really diversified clientele. After we filled our bellies we headed back to the Comfort Inn to take it easy and get ready for the next day. Watched the Pickers on the tube for an hour before calling it a night. Keep on Cruisin', Walt
